According to Drug Policy Alliance the United States spends upwards of $40 billion per year on the drug war. What is competing with the drug war money for funding? You may be surprised to know that it is education. Nationally, nearly 500,000 incarcerated drug law violators need to be housed, and as a result education loses.
Aside from the financial loss, the emotional loss is great as well. Each addicted person affects at least four other people.
Over at Intervene, (A community of parents concerned about their teen’s alcohol and drug use.) I noticed a post written by Olivia Chao about Lisa Scinta and her song “Addiction: Michael’s Song”. It is very touching. You can feel her pain as she sings for her brother. I wanted to share it with you.
“Lisa is among the 85 million people – including family and friends – in our country affected by addiction.” Olivia Chao
Listen to Lisa’s song:
“One in eight Americans struggle with addiction of some kind, whether it be drugs or alcohol. Having personally dealt with it, I know how frustrated and helpless you feel when someone you love is lost in their drug of choice. It is an awful way to live, and if you have a loved one that has an addiction, I pray for you and ask that you pray for my brother Michael as well. As always, it’s far from perfect, but I wrote it in one day and felt strongly enough about it to get it up! Thank you for watching
