While addiction waits for Superman, the following are people and sites that are doing great recovery work that comes from the heart.
Linda Quirk ~ I’m in awe. “In 2008, Linda Quirk set out to run a marathon on each of the planet’s seven continents in hopes of raising one million dollars for a drug and alcohol treatment scholarships. She kicked off her mission with the Boston Marathon then went on to run The Great Wall of China, Kenya (Safari.com), Easter Island, Reykjavik, Melbourne and the freezing glaciers of Antarctica. She completed her seven on seven mission March of 2009, but was far from her raising her million dollar goal. So, she dreamed even bigger and announced to the world her attempt at history – to become the first woman to complete the 4 Deserts in under a year in 2010.”
and then…
“At 57-years old, Linda Quirk has trained harder than she’s ever trained in order to complete four, 155-mile foot races in under a year. She’s changed her diet, her running regime and even ran over 50 miles in one day with a 20 pound pack on her back. Linda’s attempt will take her across the Atacama (Chile), the Gobi (China), Sahara (Egypt) and finally, the Antarctica deserts.” I think I’ll support Linda’s cause, how about you? The proceeds go to Caron Treatment Centers for someone in need of treatment.
Denise Krochta, author of “Sweat: A Practical Plan for Keeping Your Heart Intact While Loving an Addict”
“Sweat is the true-life story of author Denise Krochta, a mom who moved into“crisis” mode when she discovered that her teenage son was addicted to prescription drugs, along with alcohol and street drugs. Hers is a story of discovery and recovery. She offers experience, not advice. She developed this simple plan for dealing with an addict in the family, and used it herself. She now shares it with others who also live surrounded by the chaos of a drug-addicted family member.”
Her radio show is “Addicted to Addicts: Survival 101″ “When author Denise Krochta began her search for “answers” to help herself and the addicts in her life, she found the process daunting. There were plenty of opinions – and bits and pieces of information scattered everywhere. The search was as stressful as the addicts in her life. Hear all the important, and sometimes difficult, questions related to living with and around addicts and loving them. Denise and her expert guests offer information, possibilities, relief, and hope. Sometimes knowledge is scary, but always knowledge is power.”
Lisa Frederiksen is a researcher, writer, speaker, consultant, and most recently, author of her 7th and 8th books, “If You Loved Me, You’d Stop” and “Loved One in Treatment? Now What?” She writes a blog and presents and consults to a wide variety of groups, families, and individuals. She was a recent guest on Denise’s radio show.
“Frederiksen now focuses her efforts in two areas: 1) women’s history and the answers it provides for shaping today’s societal views and public policy issues regarding the concerns of women and families, and 2) alcohol related issues – especially the new brain research, which is helping to debunk old assumptions about alcohol and its impact on the drinker, the family and society as a whole. She also does writing and consulting work with companies and organizations.”
